THE STORY
 

Originally built in 1955, Covina Bowl was a source of entertainment offering 50 lanes total for the Covina community to enjoy. Over time, the facility was abandoned for seven years and was considered the most endangered building in Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Conservancy, subject to demolition. Given its deep significance for the city and history, developers saw it as an attractive site to build housing.

Collaborating with Trumark Homes, WHA designed a collection of townhomes and flats inspired by the namesake of the land it’s built on. Having an architectural historian involved in the design process from the start allowed for synergy between the two products. A priority was to preserve the character-defining elements of the original Googie style architecture, which is showcased through the restoration of the iconic sign, as well as a portion of the Covina Bowl Building as commercial space. The original colors of turquoise, gold, and coral were utilized on the residences as bold accent areas to complement the restoration of the bowling alley without being overpowering. Historical nods throughout the site include street names like “Pin Lane” and “Strike Drive”, and a lawn bowling amenity as tribute to a Googie icon.

 

The residences at Covina Bowl are a higher density, next-generation product designed to be attainable for a variety of buyers. Buyers are offered two unique building designs of Row Towns or Towns/Flats that emphasize modern lifestyles. The 3-story Rows offer 2 floor plans with up to 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and 2-car garages. The flexible plans include a first-floor den or secondary bedroom on the first floor, private decks on the second floor, and spacious lofts on the top floor. Residents opting for the Flats and Towns design have the selection of 7 floor plans featuring up to 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, and 2-car garages. Dependent on the plan, private decks, flex, and office spaces are included for those who seek additional living areas.
