THE STORY
Objective: mixed-use contribution to Old Town revitalization that synthesizes contemporary uses with rich historic character. Challenges: translating previous, simple 2-story building types to larger scale and higher density; infusing substantial parking structure with aesthetic appeal.
-
Updated town square differentiates architecture by use, with storefront character for each frontage.Such heritage buildings as corner bank, grand hotel and Art Deco theater inspire interwoven references to old Main Street, once the favorite location for Hollywood’s Westerns and other classics.
-
Pedestrian friendly and oriented away from heat and wind, this new plaza creates an inviting public living room at ground level. With about 20,000 s.f. of retail and restaurant spaces, this commercial core serves visitors, locals and upscale dwelling units above.
-
Six-plex theater supports heritage themes and Laemmle family’s enduring community commitment. Home to art films and festivals, first–runs and blockbusters, it will also host neighborhood and seniors events.
-
Behind retail and theater, parking garage uses 4 distinct elevations, angled elements and variegated windows to reduce mass and promote storefront ambience that is strengthened by pedestrian path. Specific Plan’s bike nodes and commuter rail further activate the vibrant new plaza.
